MINUTES OF THE REGULAR MEETING OF THE BOARD OF EDUCATION CARBONDALE COMMUNITY HIGH SCHOOL DISTRICT 165, CARBONDALE, ILLINOIS HELD JANUARY 16, 2014

The regular meeting of the Board of Education of School District 165 was held in the cafeteria of Carbondale Community High School, 1301 East Walnut Street, Carbondale, Illinois, on Thursday, January 16, 2014, at 7:00 p.m.

Upon roll call, the following members were present:

President King declared a quorum present and the regular meeting of January 16, 2014, was called to order.

Minutes: The minutes of the regular meeting of December 19, 2013, were approved as distributed.

Executive Session Minutes: Motion by Neill, seconded by Flowers, to approve the December 19, 2013 Executive Session minutes. Roll call: Booziotis, Flowers, Hudgins, King and Neill voted yes. Nay, none. Motion carried.

Old Business: There were no old business items.

Mathematics Department Newsletter: The Board of Education received the Mathematics Department Newsletter for their review.

Scholar Bowl Team: The CCHS Scholar Bowl Team was ranked number 11 out of the top 150 high school quiz bowl teams in the world by High School Quiz Bowl Rankings.

Multicultural Festival Invitation: The Board received invitations to the Multicultural Festival to be held February 13, 2014.

Public Comments: There were no public comments.

Payment of Bills: Motion by Flowers, seconded by Booziotis, to pay the remaining bills for the month of December, 2013; and, those available for payment for the month of January, 2014. Roll call: Flowers, Hudgins, King, Neill and Booziotis voted yes. Nay, none. Motion carried.

Member Hudgins said that 710 Bookstore was closing and asked if the district had a large account with them. Steve Kosco said no that the account was small.

Member Hudgins asked if the Carbondale Holiday Tournament numbers were in yet. Superintendent Murphy said no, that it would be February or March before all the bills were received.

2014-15 Curriculum Recommendations: Motion by Booziotis, seconded by Hudgins, to approve the curriculum recommendations for the 2014-15 school year as presented:

Introduction to Piano (Lab)

Construction Surveying, Layout & Material Estimation

Web Page Design

Career Readiness

Roll call: Hudgins, King, Neill, Booziotis and Flowers voted yes. Nay, none. Motion carried.

Member Hudgins stated the classes were very timely. He asked what the Perkins Grant and CTE was. Superintendent Murphy said that CTE was an abbreviation for Career and Technical Education and that the Perkins Grant provided funds for Career and Technical Education. He said the district used the grant funds for the Carl Perkins Grant Teacher Aide. Member Hudgins asked if the district provided typing classes like they used to when he was in school. Superintendent Murphy said the district does offer typing classes, but the enrollment numbers were dwindling and that was why they were creating alternative classes such as the Web Page Design class. Member Hudgins asked the students in the audience how they typed; were they traditional typists or pecking typists. The students responded they used both styles.

President King asked if the district still offered a construction skills class. Principal Booth said that yes the district offered a construction skills class that focused on interior and exterior construction. He said that the new Construction Surveying, Layout and Material Estimation class would follow the current course as section two of the program. President King said that it was very important to keep our vocational programs because not everyone goes to college.

Approval of "Love Your Heart" Free Personal Leave Day Drawing: Motion by Flowers, seconded by Neill, to approve a free personal leave day (as a drawing) in the annual promotion of faculty and staff participation in good heart practices by getting a blood pressure check (to qualify for the drawing) during "Love Your Heart Week" in February. Roll call: King, Neill, Booziotis, Flowers and Hudgins voted yes. Nay, none. Motion carried.

Member Hudgins asked how many people were helped by last year's contest. Superintendent Murphy said that 92 people participated and that 22 people had blood pressures that exceeded the normal range; eight of which had no prior diagnosis of pre-hypertension or hypertension. All 22 people were referred to their physicians for follow-up; and at least five of them were diagnosed with hypertension and prescribed medication.

Member Booziotis asked if more than just a blood pressure check was done. Superintendent Murphy said no, but that there was an annual wellness day inservice that provided more services.

Bids and Quotes: There were no bid or quote items.

Personnel: There were no personnel items.

February Board Meeting: The February Board of Education meeting will be Thursday, February 20, 2014.

NHS Induction Ceremony: The National Honor Society Induction Ceremony will be January 27, 2014, at 7:00 p.m. in the auditorium.

Executive Session: Motion by Booziotis, seconded by Hudgins, to consider information regarding the appointment, employment, compensation, discipline, performance or dismissal of specific employees; collective bargaining matters and litigation. Roll call: Neill, Booziotis, Flowers, Hudgins and King voted yes. Nay, none. Motion carried.

President King announced there would be no action taken by the Board following the executive session.

The meeting recessed at 7:18 p.m. The Board members went into executive session at 7:25 p.m.

Executive Session Adjourns: The executive session adjourned at 8:43 p.m.

Public Portion of the Meeting Reconvenes: The public portion of the meeting reconvened at 8:44 p.m.

Adjournment: The meeting adjourned at 8:44 p.m.

MINUTES APPROVED: FEBRUARY 20, 2014
