CORRECTED MINUTES OF THE REGULAR MEETING OF THE BOARD OF EDUCATION, CARBONDALE COMMUNITY HIGH SCHOOL DISTRICT 165, CARBONDALE, ILLINOIS, HELD MAY 15, 2008

The regular scheduled meeting of the Board of Education of School District 165 was held in the cafeteria of Carbondale Community High School, 1301 East Walnut Street, Carbondale, Illinois, on Thursday, May 15, 2008 at 7:00 p.m.

Upon roll call, the following members were present: Barbara Bennett, Linda Flowers, Linda Brandon, Kenneth Hughes, Robert Brewer, Barbara Levine and Mike Durr. Also present: Steven R. Sabens, Steve Kosco, Vicky King and David Craig.

President Levine declared a quorum present and the regular scheduled meeting of May 15, 2008 was called to order.

Recognitions: Mrs. Gwen Poore was selected as the 2008 CCHSEA Teacher of the Year. The Board of Education received the Foreign Language Department newsletter for their review.

Rescheduling of June Board Of Education Meeting: President Levine announced that due to scheduling conflicts the June 19, 2008, Board of Education meeting would be rescheduled to June 26, 2008, at 7:00 p.m.

Payment of Bills: Motion by Brandon, seconded by Hughes, to pay the remaining bills for the month of April, 2008; and, those available for payment for the month of May, 2008. Roll call: Bennett, Brandon, Brewer, Durr, Flowers, Hughes and Levine voted yes. Nay, none. Motion carried.

Summer School 2008: Virginia Appuhn updated the Board on the 2008 Summer School Program. The Board of Education received information on the Rebound summer session program.

Approval of Cafeteria Workers Contract 2008-2011: Motion by Hughes, seconded by Durr, to approve the Substantive Agreement Between The Board of Education of School District 165 and the CCHSEA Service Employees International Union Local 316 Cafeteria for the period July 1, 2008-June 30, 2011, as presented. Roll call: Bennett, Brandon, Brewer, Durr, Flowers, Hughes and Levine voted yes. Nay, none. Motion carried.

Awarding of Bids for Milk and Bread Products, Rebound Roof Repairs and Track Repairs: Motion by Durr, seconded by Bennett, to acknowledge receipt of the bids received; and to award the following bids to the low bidders as indicated: Milk--Prairie Farms Dairy (FY09); Bread--Earthgrains Baking Company, Inc. (FY09); Rebound Roof Repairs--Baine Roofing Co. $140,946.00; Track Repairs--Track Surfaces Co. $51,000.00. Roll call: Bennett, Brandon, Brewer, Durr, Flowers, Hughes and Levine voted yes. Nay, none. Motion carried.

Approval of 2008 B.O.E. Recognition Awards: Motion by Durr, seconded by Flowers, to approve the 2008 list of Board of Education Recognition Awards as presented. Roll call: Bennett, Brandon, Brewer, Durr, Flowers, Hughes and Levine voted yes. Nay, none. Motion carried.

Transfer of Interest Income: Motion by Brandon, seconded by Durr, to adopt the Resolution To Permanently Transfer Interest Income of $93,000.00 from the Working Cash Fund to the Education Fund, as presented. Roll call: Bennett, Brandon, Brewer, Durr, Flowers, Hughes and Levine voted yes. Nay, none.Motion carried.

Working Cash Abatement Authorization: Motion by Hughes, seconded by Bennett, to adopt the Resolution to abate $160,000.00 from the Working Cash Fund to the Operations and Maintenance Fund, and to abate $19,910.00 from the Working Cash Fund to the Education Fund, as presented. Roll call: Bennett, Brandon, Brewer, Durr, Flowers, Hughes and Levine voted yes. Nay, none. Motion carried.

Retirements/Resignations: Motion by Brandon, seconded by Durr, to accept the following retirements/resignations as presented: a) Julie Bohnsack (special education teacher) retirement effective at the end of the 2009-10 school year;b) Matthew Garrett (English teacher) resignation effective at the end of the 2007-08 school year. Roll call: Bennett, Brandon, Brewer, Durr, Flowers, Hughes and Levine voted yes. Nay, none. Motion carried.

Employments: Motion by Durr, seconded by Hughes, to employ the following personnel for the 2008-09 school year and the 2008 summer school personnel:

a. Emily Hayes, Full-time English Teacher--Ms. Hayes’ education and experience will place her at line five, MA/MS on the teacher salary schedule.

b. Michelle Buchheit, Temporary Full-time Science Teacher (Matt Owen’s Military Leave of Absence Position)--Ms. Buchheit’s education and experience will place her at line three, MA/MS+24 on the teacher salary schedule.

c. Gloria Jones, Part-time (4/6-time) Art Teacher--Ms. Jones’ education and experience will place her at line 9, MA/MS (pro-rated at 4/6-time) on the teacher salary schedule.

d. Dennis Johnson, Part-time (2/6-time) Mathematics Teacher--Mr. Johnson’s education and experience will place him at line 22, MA/MS+24 (pro-rated at 2/6-time)on the teacher salary schedule.

e. Rebecca McCrary, Part-time (3/6-time) Foreign Language Teacher--Ms. McCrary’s education and experience will place her at line .5, BA/BS+24 (pro-rated at 3/6-time) on the teacher salary schedule.

f. Person to be Named if Needed: Part-time (1/6-time) Social Studies Teacher.

g. Lisa Bastien, Secretary to the Director of Student Services and Programs (Full-time, 12-Month Position)--Employment transfer from her current position as Secretary to the Assistant Principals (a full-time, 10-month position), to the position of Secretary to the Director of Student Services and Programs (a full-time, 12-month position), retroactive to April 28, 2008.

h. Sandra Tite, Secretary to the Assistant Principals/Career and Technical Education Department (Full-time, 12-Month Position)--Employment transfer from her current position as Secretary to the Career and Technical Education Department (a part-time, 12-month position), to the position of Secretary to the Assistant Principals/Secretary to the Career and Technical Education Department (a full-time, 12-month position), effective May 16, 2008.

i. Summer School Personnel--Personnel as presented, subject to final enrollment numbers.

1. Regular Summer School Program: a. American Government--June 9-August 1, 2008 – 160 Hours--Personnel: Michael Cannell and Brandi Jones; b. Driver Education: Classroom Instruction-- June 9-July 3, 2008--Two Sections @ 40 Hours/Section--Personnel: Kim Wheeler; d. Driver Education: Behind-the-Wheel Instruction--Personnel: Daniel Booth, Bob Taylor, Michael Butler and Mark Albertini; e. Hall Monitors--Personnel: Andrew Smith and Carlton Smith-- June 9-July 3, 2008--Monday-Friday: 7:45 a.m.-3:15 p.m.--July 7-August 1, 2008--Monday-Friday: 7:45 a.m.-1:00 p.m.; f. Temporary Part-time Guidance Staff--Personnel: Jennifer Gilbert--June 9-July 18, 2008--Minimum wage rate of pay.

2. 2008 John Gilbert Summer Enrichment Program--June 9-July 18, 2008:

3. Title I Programs--June 9-August 1, 2008--Monday-Friday; Four hours per day: a. Personnel: Kyle Povolish, Virginia Appuhn, Cindy Donoghue, Darryl Cox, Sharon Schemonia, Erin Sagaskie, Judy Major and Joe Clements; b. Teacher Aides: Jo Carol Deniston and Loretta Scott.

Roll call: Bennett, Brandon, Brewer, Durr, Flowers, Hughes and Levine voted yes. Nay, none. Motion carried.
