MINUTES OF THE REGULAR MEETING OF THE BOARD OF EDUCATION CARBONDALE COMMUNITY HIGH SCHOOL DISTRICT 165, CARBONDALE, ILLINOIS HELD MAY 21, 2009 The regular scheduled meeting of the Board of Education of School District 165 was held in the cafeteria of Carbondale Community High School, 1301 East Walnut Street, Carbondale, Illinois, on Thursday, May 21, 2009 at 7:00 p.m. Upon roll call, the following members were present: Kathy Booziotis, William Sherwood, Robert Brewer, Francis Tsung and Kenneth Hughes.The following members were absent: Mike Durr and Linda Flowers. Also present: Steven R. Sabens, Crystal Swan-Gravatt, Steve Kosco, David Craig, Vicky King, Virginia Appuhn, Steve Murphy and Erik Berrey. President Brewer declared a quorum present and the regular scheduled meeting of May 21, 2009 was called to order. Minutes: The minutes of the regular meeting of April 16, 2009, and the special meeting of April 29, 2009, were approved as distributed. Recognitions: Mrs. Julie Bohnsack was selected as the 2009 CCHSEA Teacher of the Year. CCHS received the ISBE Certificate of Financial Recognition. The Board of Education received newsletters from the Science Department and the Career and Technical Education Department for their review. Payment of Bills: Motion by Hughes, seconded by Sherwood, to pay the remaining bills for the month of April, 2009; and, those available for payment for the month of May, 2009. Roll call: Booziotis, Brewer, Hughes, Sherwood and Tsung voted yes. Nay, none. Motion carried. Summer School 2009: Virginia Appuhn updated the Board on the 2009 Summer School Program. The Board of Education received information on the Rebound summer session program. Awarding of Bids for Milk and Bread Products: Motion by Sherwood, seconded by Tsung, to acknowledge receipt of the bids received; and to award the following bids to the low bidders as indicated: Milk: Prairie Farms Dairy (FY10); Bread: Earthgrains Baking Company, Inc. (FY10). Roll call: Brewer, Hughes, Sherwood, Tsung and Booziotis voted yes. Nay, none. Motion carried. Approval of 2009 B.O.E. Recognition Awards: Motion by Sherwood, seconded by Tsung, to approve the 2009 list of Board of Education Recognition Awards as presented. Roll call: Hughes, Sherwood, Tsung, Booziotis and Brewer voted yes. Nay, none. Motion carried. Working Cash Abatement Authorization Resolution: Motion by Hughes, seconded by Booziotis, to adopt the Resolution to abate $510,000.00 from the Working Cash Fund to the Education Fund as presented. Roll call: Sherwood, Tsung, Booziotis, Brewer and Hughes voted yes. Nay, none. Motion carried. Annual Resolution for SIU-C Student Teachers: Motion by Booziotis, seconded by Hughes, to approve the Resolution authorizing the acceptance of student teachers from SIU for the 2009-10 school year as presented. Roll call: Tsung, Booziotis, Brewer, Hughes, Sherwood and Tsung voted yes. Nay, none. Motion carried. Amend the 2008-09 School Calendar and Revise the 2009-10 School Calendar: Motion by Sherwood, seconded by Booziotis, to approve the amended 2008-09 School Calendar and the revised 2009-10 school calendar as presented. Roll call: Booziotis, Brewer, Hughes, Sherwood and Tsung voted yes. Nay, none. Motion carried. Resignations: Motion by Hughes, seconded by Tsung, to accept the following resignations as presented: a. Joe Clements, science teacher, resignation effective April 30, 2009; b. Sean Patrick, teacher aide, resignation effective May 15, 2009. Roll call:Brewer, Hughes, Sherwood, Tsung and Booziotis voted yes. Nay, none. Motion carried. Employments: Motion by Tsung, seconded by Booziotis, to approve the indicated action regarding the following personnel as presented: a. Dennis Johnson, Part-time (2/6-time) Mathematics Teacher--Mr. Johnson will be employed as a part-time (2/6-time) mathematics teacher, for the 2009-10 school year. Mr. Johnson’s education and experience will place him at line 22, column MA/MS+24 on the teacher salary schedule. b. Christopher Apple, Full-time Business Education Teacher--Mr. Apple will be employed as a full-time business education teacher for the 2009-10 school year. Mr. Apple’s education and experience will place him at line zero, column BA/BS on the teacher salary schedule. c. Pamela Barr, Full-time Special Education Teacher--Ms. Barr will be employed as a full-time special education teacher for the 2009-10 school year. Ms. Barr’s education and experience will place her at line 18, column BA/BS on the teacher salary schedule. d. Ryan Thomas, Temporary Full-time Special Education Teacher (Leave of Absence Position)--Mr. Thomas will be employed as a temporary full-time special education teacher, to fill the leave of absence vacancy of Laura Weber for the 2009-10 school year as needed. Mr. Thomas’ education and experience will place him line one, column BA/BS on the teacher salary schedule. e. Carlyn Zimmermann, Temporary Full-Time Chorus Teacher (Leave of Absence Position)--Ms. Zimmermann will be employed as a temporary full-time chorus teacher, to fill the leave of absence vacancy of Kara Gregory for the 2009-10 school year as needed. Ms. Zimmermann’s education and experience will place her at line seven, column MA/MS on the teacher salary schedule. f. Natalie McLean, Temporary Full-Time English Teacher (Leave of Absence Position)--Ms. McLean will be employed as a temporary full-time English teacher, to fill the leave of absence vacancy of Casey Barlage for the 2009-10 school year as needed. Ms. McLean’s education and experience will place her at line zero, column BA/BS on the teacher salary schedule. g. Jarrod Ritter, Secretary to the Career Education Department and Assistant Principals--Mr. Ritter will be employed as the Secretary to the Career Education Department and Assistant Principals, a full-time 12-month position. His rate of pay will be $9.87 per hour at 37.5 hours per week. h. Summer School Personnel--Personnel as presented, subject to final enrollment numbers. 1. Regular Summer School Program: a. American Government--June 8-July 31, 2009 – 160 Hours--Personnel: Brandi Jones (160 Hours), Casey Raymer (80 Hours) and Todd Zentefis (80 Hours); b.
